Preliminary rounds of the 2011 New Zealand Swimming Championship: Day six - Swimming News
Morning session on the last day of the 2011 New Zealand Swimming Championship has concluded in Auckland. The championship will end today after the second session and will announce the New Zealand swimming team to compete at the 2011 World Championships in
Shanghai.
The session featured the preliminary rounds of the Men’s 50m freestyle, 100m butterfly and 400m Individual Medley along with the Women’s 50m butterfly, 200m backstroke and 400m IM.
The session started with the heats of the Men’s 50m freestyle, where Laser Mt Eden Swimming Club’s Orinoco Faamausili Banse earned the fastest qualification spot in 23.31 seconds. Banse was followed by Templeton’s Cameron Simpson and North Shore Swimming’s
Carl O'Donnell, who touched the wall for second and third fastest qualification in a time of 23.56 and 23.65 seconds, respectively.
The next event was the Women’s 50m butterfly, where Comet Swimming Club’s Laura Quilter occupied the fastest qualification spot with his wonderful swim of 27.62 seconds. North Shore Swimming’s Hayley Palmer and Roskill Swimming Club’s Danielle Koni, followed
him into the finals with a timing of 28.06 and 28.08 seconds, respectively. The fourth fastest qualification spot was secured by another North Shore’s pupil Samantha Richter, who posted 28.31 seconds.
In the Men’s 100m butterfly heats, Roskill Swimming Club’s Corney Swanepoel emerged as the fastest qualifying swimmer with a stunning 54.43 seconds. He was followed by Laser Mt Eden Swimming Club’s Velimir Stjepanovic and North Shore Swimming’s Shaun Burnett,
who touched home in 55.43 and 55.48 seconds, respectively. Burnett was followed by two of his team-members, Daniel Bell and Andrew McMillan, who finished just behind him in 55.49 and 55.63 seconds, respectively.
Melissa Ingram of North Shore Swimming then produced a wonderful swim of 2:12.16 minutes and claimed the fastest qualification spot in the Women’s 200m backstroke. She was followed by Aqua Gym’s Sophia Batchelor and her team-member Jessie Blundell, who touched
the wall in 2:14.54 and 2:15.89 minutes, respectively.
In the Women’s 400m IM, North Shore Swimming’s Chloe Francis was sighted as the fastest swimmer in a time of 4:59.23 minutes ahead of the two Capital Swim Club’s pupils, Samantha Lucie-Smith and Kelsey Moffatt, who qualified as the second and third fastest
swimmers in 5:01.58 and 5:02.80 minutes, respectively.
The last event of the session was the Men’s 400m event, where the arena witnessed a gruelling effort from Greerton’s Nathan Capp, who smashed the fastest seat into the finals with his 4:33.76 minutes effort. Capp’s timing placed him comfortably ahead of
the Howick Pakuranga’s Carsten Corazza and North Shore Swimming’s Steven Kent, who finish second and third with a timing of 4:34.26 and 4:36.95 minutes, respectively.
The finals of the same events will be conducted in the evening session, where the winners will be selected for the New Zealand team to Shanghai, in July.
