Preliminary rounds of the 2011 Telkom SA National Championships - Day one
Morning session on day one of the 2011 Telkom SA National Championships concluded with the preliminary rounds of the 200m freestyle, 50m backstroke, 400m freestyle, 200m butterfly and the 50m breast-stroke in the Men’s and Women’s category.
The championship is a trial basis for South African swimmers to qualify for the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, this July.
The session started with the Women’s 200m freestyle, where the arena witnessed a dominating performance from NTS-NT’s Leone Vorster, who qualified as the fastest swimmer into the finals with a timing of 2:01.35 minutes. The 23-year-old Vorster out-touched
her team-members Karin Prinsloo and Jessica Pengelly, who qualified as the second and third fastest swimmers in a time of 2:01.73 and 2:04.73 minutes, respectively.
Next was the Men’s 50m backstroke, where KZNA-KZ’s Charl Crous appeared as the fastest qualifying swimmer in a time of 26.10 seconds. Crous with his tremendous effort was comfortably ahead of the WPA-WP’s Zaahir Gamiet and N-KZN-NN’s Jacque Van Wyk, who
touched the wall second and third in a time of 26.81 and 28.73 seconds, respectively.
Moments later, Vanessa Mohr of NTS-NT dominated the Women’s 50m butterfly in an astounding time of 27.49 seconds. Her timing placed her comfortably ahead of WPA-WP’s Ashley Cooper and KZNA-KZ’s Tanique P Kidd, who appeared as the second and third fastest
swimmers in a time of 28.29 and 30.17 seconds, respectively.
In the Men’s 400m, Mark B Randall posted a stupendous time of 3:55.83 minutes to finish ahead of the KZNA-KZ’s Myles M Brown and CGA-CG’s Micah Stephens, who touched the wall for second and third spot in a time of 4:00.02 and 4:16.14 minutes, respectively.
In the Women’s 200m IM, KZNA-KZ’s Kathy Meakin remained evident as the fastest swimmer throughout the race and clocked 2:15.13 minutes. She was followed by her team-member Lindsay McLeod, who touched the wall in a time of 2:22.98 minutes. The third fastest
qualification spot was secured by EP-EP’s Lise-Ma Goosen in a time of 2:29.96 minutes.
The next event was the Men’s 200m butterfly, where Sebastian Rousseau of WPA-WP dominated the event in a time of 1:58.85 minutes. Rousseau was comfortably ahead of KZNA-KZ’s Chad Le Clos and LP-LP’s Ricca Caldeira, who touched the wall in a time of 2:01.67
and 2:13.64 minutes, respectively.
The last event of the session was the Women’s 50m breast-stroke, where KZNA-KZ’s Claire Conlon occupied the fastest qualification spot in 32.44 seconds. Taryn Mackenzie and Tara Nicholas followed her on the podium with a timing of 33.22 and 33.28 seconds,
respectively.
The finals of the same events will be conducted in the evening session, where the winners of each event will confirm their spots for the 2011 Shanghai Championships.
