Preliminary rounds of the 2011 Telkom South Africa National Championships - day two
Morning session of day two of the 2011 Telkom South Africa National Championships concluded on Tuesday in Newton Park Pool, Elizabeth. The championship serves as a trial basis for the national swimmers to qualify for the South African Swimming Team to compete
at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai this July.
The  session included the preliminary rounds of the 50m butterfly, 100m back-stroke, 100m breast-stroke, 100m freestyle and the 200m freestyle in the Men’s and Women’s category.
The session initiated with the heats of Men’s 50m butterfly, where NTS-NT’s Roland Schoeman earned the fastest qualification into the final by clocking a time of 23.62 seconds. CGA-CG’s Graeme Moore and his team member Garth Tune followed him into the finals
as the second and third fastest swimmers in a time of 24.56 and 24.65 seconds respectively.
Later, Karin Prinsloo of NTS-NT presented a spectacular swim in the Women’s 100m back-stroke by touching the wall in a time of 1:04.80 minutes. She was followed by Natasha De Vos and Ja Engelbrecht, who touched home in 1:04.80 and 1:08.98 minutes respectively.
Moments later, Rory Buck stunned the arena with his grueling effort of 1:03.65 minutes that out-touched his closest competitor Camera VD Burgh with a difference of 0.02 seconds. Burgh clocked time of 1:03.67 to qualify as the second fastest swimmer ahead
of the CGA-CG’s Jared Pike, who reported in 1:04.35 minutes.
Then, the fastest qualifying swimmer in the 100m back-stroke, Karin Prinsloo once again dominated her swim in the event of the Women’s 100m freestyle. She occupied the fastest qualification spot in a time of 56.31 seconds and was followed by Natalie Elphick
and Leone Vorster in a time of 57.53 and 58.17 seconds.
The last event of the session was the Men’s 200m freestyle, where Sebastian Rousseau transpired as the fastest swimmer into the finals with a timing of 1:51.21 minutes. Jean Basson and Jay-Cee Thomson followed him into the finals with a fighting time of
1:51.30 and 1:51.49 minutes respectively.
The finals of the same events will take place in the evening session, where the winners of every event will confirm their spots for Shanghai in July.
