Preliminary rounds of the NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships: Day three
Day four of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championship put up a great show between California Berkeley and the defending champions, University of Texas.
The championship was hosted by the University of Minnesota Aquatic Centre, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, from March 24-26.
The day started with the preliminary rounds of the 200-yard back-stroke, where Indiana’s Eric Ress qualified as the fastest swimmer in a time of 1:39.52 minutes. He was followed by Florida’s junior Marco Loughran and Arizona’s junior Cory Chitwood for the
second and third places in a time of 1:40.49 minutes and 1:40.67 minutes, respectively.
In the Men’s 100-yard freestyle, Auburn University’s Adam Brown, qualified as the fastest swimmer into the finals in a time of 41.75 seconds, ahead of Texas’s junior Jimmy Feigen and Auburn’s Freshman Marcelo Chierighini, who appeared as the second and third
fastest swimmers in a time of 42.01 and 42.26 seconds, respectively.
The subsequent event was the 200-yard breast-stroke meet, where Texas’s Nick D’ Innocenzo claimed the fastest qualification spot with a timing of 1:53.46 minutes. His fellow team-member, Eric Friedland and California’s Martti Aljand, followed him to the
finishing wall in a time of 1:53.58 and 1:53.92 minutes, respectively.
In the Men’s 200-yard butterfly category, Stanford’s Bobby Bollier secured the gold medal by qualifying in a fastest time of 1:41.63 minutes. His time gave him a comfortable lead over Georgia’s Mark Dylla and Michigan’s Dan Madwed, who touched the wall in
a time of 1:42.15 and 1:42.40 minutes, respectively.
In the Men’s 400-yard freestyle relay event, California touched just the wall 0.12 seconds before Auburn University, clocking a time of 2:49.61 minutes against Auburn’s 2:49.73 minutes. California was slightly away from Auburn University and Southern California,
who touched the wall in a time of 2:49.73 and 2:50.86 minutes, respectively.
The last event of the session was the time final of the 1650-yard freestyle, which was captured by Texas’s Michael McBroom in a wonderful time of 14:32.86 minutes. The second position was occupied by Georgia’s Martin Grodzki, who touched the wall in 14:34.80
minutes. Stanford’s Chad La Tourette claimed the third spot on the podium in a time of 14:34.80 minutes.
The finals of all the scheduled events will be contested in the evening sessions, to identify the winning team of the championship.
