Premier League: Arsenal v Newcastle half time report
Arsenal 0 Newcastle 1
Newcastle lead Arsenal at half time at the Emirates thanks to Andy Carroll’s header.
The goal came on the back of a period where Arsenal looked the more threatening side.
With Newcastle enjoying early possession, it was Arsenal who had the opening chance of the game. Captain Cesc Fabrégas hit the bar on 12 minutes via a deflection as Arsenal started to show signs of waking up.
Fabrégas came close once again, collecting Alex Song’s pass in the box, spinning 360 degrees and then getting his shot away, which was blocked by the Newcastle defence.
Theo Walcott, who scored twice in the 4-0 win for Arsenal over Newcastle in the Carling Cup a few weeks ago, was unable to get going down the right hand side as Arsenal lacked sharpness.
Fabrégas hit the side-netting seven minutes from time, and Newcastle ‘keeper Tim Krul pulled off a fantastic save to deny Samir Nasri just a few minutes later.
Carroll scored on the stroke of half time after thumping a header past the onrushing Arsenal ‘keeper Lukasz Fabianski. It was a mistake from the Gunners, and Fabianski should have stayed on his line.
Arsenal need to improve in the second half if they want to get anything from this game.
