Premier League: Asamoah Gyan makes his point at White Hart Lane
Tottenham 1 Sunderland 1
Sunderland’s Asamoah Gyan fired his third goal in two games, as Tottenham dropped yet more points in the challenge for a top four place.
The Ghanaian forward profited from a defensive mixup between William Gallas and Younes Kaboul to slot home Sunderland’s second half equaliser, just three minutes after Rafael van der Vaart had fired in Peter Crouch’s knockdown for the hosts – his seventh goal in six White Hart Lane appearances.
A point was the least that the visitors deserved for their lively second half display, with Gyan, Danny Welbeck and Bolo Zenden all going close to winning it for Steve Bruce’s men.
Earlier, a string of fine saves from the returning Craig Gordon kept Spurs at bay, with the Scot keeping out van der Vaart and Luka Modric with impressive stops, while Tom Huddlestone hit the crossbar from distance.
The draw leaves Tottenham and Sunderland in 6th and 7th places respectively, both on 16 points and Spurs only ahead of the Mackems on goals scored.
