Premier League: Chelsea v West Bromwich Albion half time report
Chelsea 2 West Brom 0
Goals from Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba have ensured that champions Chelsea have started the defence of their trophy in fine style.
The match was just six minutes old when Scott Carson spilled Drogba’s free kick straight into the path of John Obi Mikel, and despite the goalkeeper blocking the Nigerian’s effort, Malouda was on hand to fire home from close range.
Another Drogba free kick led to another Chelsea goal just before half time, when the Ivorian curled a long range effort around the wall and past the despairing dive of Carson.
In truth, the goals have been gifted to Chelsea, although all that has been good about tham has centred on their French winger Malouda, who was twice denied by close offside calls and should have done better with a free header after Carson saved a Frank Lampard free kick.
West Brom have played pretty football, but have offered little going forward, although Roman Bednár finished well when played through, but he was rightly ruled offside.
