Sunderland took on Blackburn Rovers at the Stadium of Light, in a game that was going to help one of the two teams leap out of the relegation zone. Sunderland managed to beat their opponents by two goals to one, following a late goal scored by Sebastian Larsson in the 90th minute.
Going into the game, everyone had mixed feelings about just what to expect, given the fact that Martin O’Neill was managing Sunderland for the first time following his appointment and as a result, anything could have happened in the game.
On the other hand, Blackburn were desperate to try and pick up a win, as they seem to have become one of the favourite favoured for relegation at the end of the season.
The match started off with Sunderland taking the game to their opponents, only to see Blackburn score the opening goal of the game.
In the 17th minute, Pedersen whipped in a free kick towards Samba and the defender went on to shoot at goal. The ball was kept out by the keeper, but his save saw the ball fall towards Vukcevic, who headed into the back of an empty net.
In the 41st minute, Blackburn thought they had gone two nil up. Pedersen whipped in another cross and Westwood and Samba collided while trying to get the ball. With the keeper on the floor, the ball simply bounced into the goal. However, the referee blew his whistle the ball rolled over the line, in order to avoid the homeside with a free kick.
Near the end of the game, Sunderland finally started to spring back into life. The team kept attacking the Blackburn goal and seemed determined to get something out of the game.
In the 84th minute, Henley tried to head the ball away from his goal, only to see it fall towards Vaughan. The Sunderland player then went on to smash a fine effort from twenty yards out, which beat Robinson and sailed into the goal.
Despite going level with Blackburn in the game, Sunderland maintained the pressure that they were imposing on the game.
As the game headed into extra time, the ball hit a Blackburn player just outside the area and the referee awarded the homeside with a free kick.
Larsson stepped up to take the free kick and sent in a brilliant delivery with precision towards the near post, which sailed past the keeper and into the back of the net.
As a result, Sunderland went on to pick up all three points from the game, thanks to a very late goal scored by Larsson.
