Premier League: Hopeless Liverpool beaten by Blackpool at Anfield
Liverpool 1 Blackpool 2
Blackpool heaped yet more misery on a hapless Liverpool with a stunning 2-1 win at Anfield.
Charlie Adam drove a penalty underneath the body of Pepe Reina following Glen Johnson’s clumsy challenge on Luke Varney, before Varney cleverly controlled a Gary Taylor-Fletcher pass to score in front of a stunned Kop shortly before half time.
Liverpool – who lost forward Fernando Torres to a groin injury after just 10 minutes – threatened to mount a comeback in the second period when Sotirios Kyrgiakos powered home Steven Gerrard’s free kick, but the Reds were unable to breach a strong Blackpool defence again, with goalkeeper Matt Gilks brilliantly denying Kyrgiakos a second in stoppage time.
The defeat leaves Liverpool stuck in the relegation zone going into the international break, and heaps more pressure on under fire boss Roy Hodgson.
Conversely, Blackpool are now up to ninth after their third away win of the season.
