Premier League Latest: Arsenal’s Cesc Fabregas a possibility against
Chelsea?
Arsene Wenger gave the Arsenal faithful a glimmer of hope as he revealed that Cesc Fabregas had some ‘little hope’ of returning for the crucial North London derby against Chelsea on Sunday.
The Spanish international injured his hamstring at the Stadium of Light nearly a fortnight ago during a ‘freakish goal’ in the early stages of the first half that ballooned over the Sunderland keeper and awarded the away team a
crucial lead. While Fabregas missed Arsenal’s Champions League group stage clash against Partizan Belgrade on Tuesday, there could be some hope that the central midfielder might feature in the squad on the game on Sunday against defending champions and current
league leaders Chelsea.
The Arsenal captain had started running and while the rest of the unit set out to Serbia for their midweek game, Fabregas worked on his rehabilitation work with the Arsenal medical team back home.
“Cesc for Partizan is impossible,” commented the Arsenal Manager before his squad flew out on Monday.
“But he has started to run so we have to monitor his progress in the week and there is a little hope there he will be available [for Sunday],” added the Frenchman.
Whether the Arsenal man is a hundred percent fit for Chelsea or whether it’ll be a gamble on the part of Wenger to put him on the bench if not in the starting eleven is hard to comment upon currently. Bringing the Spaniard on prematurely
might exacerbate his injury. However, having said that, while Jack Wilshere has done well orchestrating the Arsenal attack, it might be a bit of risk putting the eighteen year old in the middle of Stamford Bridge.
Some Arsenal fans might still remember Fabregas was introduced as a super sub against Aston Villa last season. The Spaniard made an instant impact; first, by scoring from a dead ball situation just outside the box and then making
a dash from the Arsenal half to the Aston Villa goal as part of a counter attack and finishing the final ball laid on by Theo Walcott. However on the down side, the midfield maestro hobbled off the pitch moments later as he further injured himself in the process.
On a concluding note, while it may be gamble to feature the Arsenal captain, it might also be a move that makes all the difference when the domestic league unfolds in May next year.
