Premier League: Liverpool v Chelsea half time report
Liverpool 2 Chelsea 0
Liverpool have a deserved lead at half time against champions Chelsea at Anfield.
Fernando Torres brought the champions down to earth with a goal with the first chance of the game after he finished beautifully from Dirk Kuyt’s cross-diagonal pass on 11 minutes. It was the Torres of old that set Anfield into jubilant celebrations.
The Spaniard scored his second of the game with another wonderful finish, picking up the ball from just inside the box, and curling the ball into the far corner to round off a fine first half for him.
Chelsea then registered their first shot on target, with Salomon Kalou’s header straight at Liverpool ‘keeper Pepe Reina.
Torres was causing problems for the Chelsea defence, and his neat flick-on to Maxi Rodriguez on 20 minutes nearly brought about the second goal, but Rodriguez’s effort was a long way off Chelsea ‘keeper Petr Cech’s goal.
Chelsea were unable to get into the game, with Liverpool defending well and getting in their faces all over the pitch.
Torres scored his second to put Liverpool two in front. Certainly the Torres of old was back, as he opened up his body and struck the ball past Cech and into the top corner of the net.
The defending champions have a lot of work to do after Torres ran the show in the first half.
