Premier League: Liverpool’s best XI from present squad: Part 2, Offence
It won’t be wrong to state that Liverpool has one of the best offences in the English Premier League. They have the striker for which clubs were ready to pay 70 million pounds (Spain’s Fernando Torres), in spite of him having injuries all season and giving a less-than-impressive performance at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
Not only that, but they have one of the best leaders on the field, their captain Steven Gerrard. They also just signed in the talented winger of Chelsea, Joe Cole. With such a talented squad, which also includes Dutch Dirk Kuyt, Italian Alberto Aquilani, and some gifted young players along with Torres, they are fully capable of winning the EPL title.
Here is a list of their best offensive line-up:
Defensive/ Attacking Midfielder: Steven Gerrard
The 30 year old midfielder was to join Spanish club Real Madrid for a major part of the summer this year, but in the end he relived the club’s motto of “You’ll Never Walk Alone”. The manager of Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho, has categorized Gerrard as one of the best players he has ever seen and was desperate to sign him at the club.
His charismatic and confident personality emits a motivational aura on the field, which many of his teammates have appreciated, and this rare quality has been praised by many footballing legends.
He was probably the only player in the English squad that consistently gave a good performance. Gerrard has made more than 350 appearances for his club and is looking forward to advance his 80 goal mark. With his powered up strikes and his flawless runs, he is sure to do so.
Centre Midfielder: Lucas Leiva
When he was signed in 2007, he didn’t immediately prove up to expectations, but since then he has grown a lot, so much so that manager Roy Hodgson handed him the captaincy in the preseason games before the 2010-11 season.
He is fast proving himself to be a worthy player in the Liverpool squad, and a lot can be expected from the young player in the future.
Centre Midfielder: Alberto Aquilani
The Italian prodigy promises a lot, but an injury-ridden last season campaign (which rarely saw him play the full 90 minutes with The Reds) has disturbed his routine a lot. Nevertheless, the 26 year old has an amazing assisting ability for which he has been awarded man of the match many times.
This time in the midfield he certainly has a point to prove and with a thirst for glory like his, he is sure to fulfil his desires.
Right Wing: Dirk Kuyt
The Dutch side came 2nd in the World Cup coming very close to beating Spain. The Dutch winger Dirk Kuyt played a major role in their success in the 2010 tournament. The 30 year old veteran has proven time and again his worth to Liverpool. He has had 141 appearances for the club in which he has scored 36 goals.
He has often been hailed as the 11th hour Samaritan for the club. His impeccable passing and pinpoint crosses have helped Torres a lot in scoring goals for the Reds.
Left Wing: Joe Cole
The 28 year old has been acquired from Chelsea on a free transfer after Chelsea refused to renew his contract. Steven Gerrard convinced the star to join Liverpool, and since then he has expressed many times that he is very happy with the signing.
He seems like the perfect find for the season and the cheapest signing that one could get in the summer transfer window. Cole has promised to deliver for Liverpool and help them achieve success in the English Premier League and Champions League, and he is a man who backs his words with action and delivers.
Centre Forward: Fernando Torres
The 26 year old striker has been one of the hottest topics for transfer debates this summer. Earlier, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Chelsea had made bids on him but after his dismal World Cup campaign, they withdrew their bids and now only Chelsea and Manchester City remain in the race to acquire him.
However, the striker has put to rest all the rumours and now confirmed that he will be playing for The Reds this season.
He is considered as one of the best strikers in the world and has capped 79 matches for Liverpool in which he has scored 56 times. For Spain, he has had 80 appearances in which he has scored 24 times.
