Premier League Match Analysis: Chelsea verses Wolves – Chelsea beat Wolves despite staying in second gear
Chelsea went on to beat Wolves by a score line of two goals to nil, despite the fact that the full team was barely even playing. Throughout the game Chelsea seemed to play as though the game was nothing more than a practice match, or a friendly. However
on the other hand Wolves were being given a run for their money, by a rather laid back Chelsea side.
The two players who managed to get on the score sheet for Chelsea were, Florent Malouda and Saloman Kalou. Thanks to the goal that Malouda scored, he was now joint top scorer in the league along with Manchester City's Carlos Tevez.
Throughout the game, Chelsea seemed more than content to let Wolves have most of the possession, while they stood back to attack the team on the break. These tactics might have been quite effective for the most part, but there were times when it looked like
Chelsea's laid back approach would cost them a goal or two.
However just when it looked like Wolves would be able to get the better of the current reigning Champions of England, Blues drew first blood with the help of Malouda. Nicolas Anelka flashed down the left wing, before finding Yuri Zhirkov with a back pass,
the Russian then set up Malouda who timed his run into the box to perfection before pushing the ball into the back of the net.
However in quite uncharacteristic manner, the goal instead of spurring the team on, managed to make them feel even more relaxed, as they took their game from third gear into second. The fans although were rather surprised by this, didn't seem to get too
alarmed as the Blues were still in lead. They also strongly believed that the only reason the team was not trying too hard, was because the players were reserving themselves for the midweek Champions League fixture.
Nonetheless, the fans managed to get a little restless and wanted to see their team score another goal and that goal finally came at the hands of the substitute Kalou. Michael Essien, found Kalou with a pin point pass and the forward did brilliantly to keep
his calm and then stroke the ball between the legs of the on rushing keeper.
The goal despite coming really late in the game was all that Chelsea needed to decide the fixture and end Wolves' hopes of trying to get a point back.
The most important thing that could be learned from the game was that, Chelsea despite barely trying managed to get a more than comfortable victory. This has led many experts to believe that perhaps Chelsea is easily on their way to retaining their crown.
