Premier League: Newcastle stun Everton at Goodison Park
Everton’s poor start to the season continued with a 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United at Goodison Park.
French international Hatem Ben Arfa scored the winner on his first start for the Magpies on the stroke of half time, as Newcastle earned their first away win since earning promotion back to the Premier League.
Everton – who struck twice in injury time to earn a draw with Manchester United last week – couldn’t recreate those heroics this time, although Marouane Fellaini did miss a glorious chance in stoppage time. The Blues, who were booed off, have now failed to win any of their five matches this season.
A shock looked on the cards at White Hart Lane too, where Wolves’ Steven Fletcher gave his side the lead shortly before the break, only for Spurs to hit back with three goals in the final 13 minutes to earn the points. Rafael van der Vaart scored his first goal for the club from the penalty spot, before Roman Pavlyuchenko and Alan Hutton secured the points.
West Brom also came from a goal down to win 3-1, as Birmingham City suffered at The Hawthorns.
Cameron Jerome gave Blues the lead, before West Brom snatched the points courtesy of a Scott Dann own goal, Peter Odemwingie’s strike and a Jonas Olsson header.
Elsewhere in the Premier League, 1-1 was the scoreline of the day.
Gerard Houllier watched his new Aston Villa side from the Villa Park stands as they drew with Bolton Wanderers. Ashley Young’s free kick gave the home side the lead only for Kevin Davies to equalise, while there was a similar story at Ewood Park, where goals from Blackburn’s Christopher Samba and Fulham’s Clint Dempsey ensured a share of the spoils.
It was 1-1 at the Britannia Stadium in the day’s early kick-off too, where West Ham’s Scott Parker saw his first half goal cancelled out by Stoke’s Kenwyne Jones.
Sunderland’s home clash with Arsenal kicks off at 17:30 GMT.
