Premier League: Newcastle vs. Stoke – Stoke come from behind to surprise Newcastle
Stoke City managed to make remarkable come back, after going one goal down, to rejuvenate and beat Newcastle United by a score line of two goals to one and in doing so, the team has successfully been lifted out of the relegation region
in the Premier League.
Kevin Nolan gave the home side the lead on the forty third minute, after he expertly converted his penalty shot in to a goal. Kenwyne Jones however started the remarkable come back, after the forward equalized for the away team, in the
second half.
The game was however decided five minutes from the final whistle, when James Perch managed to head the ball into the back of his own net. That own goal resulted in Stoke picking up their, first win of the new Premier League season.
Even though in the end the match referee added a whopping six minute of additional play in the bout but still Newcastle wasn’t able to score a leveller that could have saved them from shame at their home.
This win saw Stoke catapult to the fourteenth spot, in the League, table and are now one spot above Blackpool on goals difference. With their impressive comeback it seems that they will soon propel themselves nearer to the Top Ten.
But to do this the Stoke's manager Tony Pulis had to make some tough decisions. And one of them was when he realized the one sidedness to Rory Delap's style of play and decided to bend the player for the match. Stoke who were dominated
in the first half by the home side.
However despite the team’s dominance, Newcastle failed to create any real goal-scoring opportunities in the first half. The team managed to waste all the free-kicks that were awarded to them and didn't really have the final product that
was needed in front of goal.
Newcastle took the lead through the a penalty kick, right before the half time break, Robert Huth, brought down Andy Caroll, in the area as a cross was whipped into the box. Nolan converted the spot kick sending Thomas Sorensen in the
wrong direction. This goal meant that Stoke had been trailing every single game that they played by one goal at the half time break.
Kenwyne Jones equalized for stoke midway through the second half and gave the team some hope in a game, that they thought they had no chance of winning. As the match progressed, both the teams looked to go ahead and try and record the
win, however neither one of them proved to be successful at doing just that.
Stoke however managed to get their reward, for their dedication and determination eventually. Perch tried to intercept a cross that was headed towards Huth, but managed to deflect the ball into the back into his own net.
After that goal, Newcastle tried to pull a late equalizing goal, however all their efforts came to no avail as the final whistle soon blew, giving Stoke their first win of the season.
This also meant that Newcastle had now suffered two back to back, home defeats. Loosing two home games, in the Premier League is quite simply unacceptable. The Newcastle side have a lot of work on their hands, if they plan on staying in
the Premier League at the end of the season.
Much was expected from them since their return and the time has come for them to prove that they are worthy of the top English League.
