Premier League News - 4th Oct 2010: Arsenal, Aston Villa, Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers
ARSENAL
Arsenal's Manager, Arsene Wenger seems to be looking for positives in his side's 2-0 thrashing by defending champions, Chelsea. This loss at Stamford Bridge has put Arsenal in the fourth spot and they are now 7 points behind the table tops.
"The team fought outstandingly well and showed some great qualities," Wenger said. "We have to take the positives from that massive disappointment. We care about winning our games but you have to take a little bit of distance with the result as well. I believe
we showed outstanding quality and we have to keep battling and fighting and get our influential players back. We have an outstanding team. Having watched the game as objectively as I could, I believe we can have big regrets for having lost it,” claimed the
manager.
ASTON VILLA
Aston Villa Manager, Gerard Houllier looked unhappy with his side’s performance against Tottenham Hotspurs. Although, Villans got an early lead but they were unable to defend it as a side inspired by Rafael Van Der Vaart proved too much for the travelling
side. The Dutch scored twice in a come-from-behind victory which really disappointed the manager.
Houllier stated that he had mixed feelings about the match because he was proud of his team’s performance but disappointed with the results. It would only have been fair had the match ended in a draw and the manager argued that it was due to lack of putting
chances away that led to his side’s fall at White Hart Lane. Houllier praised his opponent's quality and strength and claimed that their historic 4-1 victory over Dutch champions, FC Twente gave them a confidence boost.
BIRMINGHAM CITY
Birmingham City's Manager, Alex McLeish has confessed that it was due to their inability to convert opportunities that their side managed a third goalless attack. Birmingham self destructed and gave up their 12 month undefeated run at St. Andrews.
The side lost to Everton when City's defender scored an own goal. Tim Cahill added the cherry on the cake when Everton finally won their first match of the season. McLeish thus stated that its up to the strikers to score foals.
He added that he was looking for players in his squad who can finish things up and wants his strikers to work harder in training and reserves matches.
BLACKBURN ROVERS
Blackburn Manager, Sam Allardyce praised Jon Walters for scoring against his side in Blackburn’s 1-0 defeat to Stoke City over the weekend. It was Allardyce who had handed Walters his first professional contract. Stoke signed the player this summer and he
scored his first goal against his former club.
It cost Stoke 2.75 million pounds to sign the 27-year-old forward and Blackburn manager had nothing but respect and praise for him. Allardyce stated that since he has worked with Walters over the years, he has seen quite a lot of improvement in him. The
manager admired Walters' determination, hard work and top quality to establish himself as a top notch player and was happy to see his development after finally making it into the top tier of English Football.
The Blackburn manager commented that it’s not often to see a youngster travelling down the leagues and then finally rising to new heights. He, however, wasn't happy with his side conceding from Walters and vowed to improve next time as these sides meet.
Blackburn have played some impressive football this season and have become one of the fiercest sides in the Premier League. They enjoy a physical style of play and have been one of the best striking forces in the league.
