Premier League News: Brazilian Robinho Signs Four-Year Deal with Italian Giants AC Milan
Right before the transfer window for the summer was about to close, Serie A club AC Milan snapped up Brazilian forward Robinho from Manchester City. An official statement released from the club stated, “The player has signed a four-year contract.”
Milan had just secured the services of Zlatan Ibrahimovic last week, which had in turn encouraged Marco Borriello to quit the Italian giants in favour of AS Roma. Now with the arrival of Robinho, Milan look like strong contenders - if not favourites - for the Serie A title.
Another statement by the club confirmed, “AC Milan announce that Marco Borriello has joined AS Roma on loan.”
Milan contained themselves at the beginning of summer, with owner Silvio Berlusconi promising to not spend big in the summer. However, the not-so-convincing pre-season performances convinced him that reinforcements were needed, and since then, former Inter Milan forward Ibrahimovic and Robinho have been signed.
Robinho, who made the biggest mistake of his career by choosing Manchester City over Chelsea, seems to have finally realized that. The 26-year old never settled in and City’s disappointing finish despite their big spending convinced the Brazilian that he had to leave. He spent last season on loan to his former club Santos but has now a found more permanent place at Milan.
Robinho told reporters, “I want to make history with this club. I will give so much happiness to my fans. I want to play with Milan because they have an excellent squad. I want to win the Scudetto and I hope I can further strengthen our attack.”
Robinho may be excited about signing with Milan, but there is no confirmation that the Brazilian will have a confirmed spot in the first-team. Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri has already made it clear that he wishes to play Ibrahimovic, Ronaldinho and Alexandre Pato up front, which leaves little space for Robinho.
It seems like so far Robinho is only a back-up player for the three first choice strikers. Any chance Robinho would get to play would be in the occasion of an injury or suspension of any of the three striking options.
Milan, who have not won the Serie A title since 2004, losing out to rivals Inter Milan, have made changes to the squad, hoping to present a tougher challenge domestically and in Europe, which was also won by Jose Mourinho’s Inter last season.
