Premier League News: Chelsea ready to splash more cash before transfer window closes
The rich keep getting richer: English Premier League Champions (2009-2010) Chelsea issued a statement recently saying that manager Carlo Ancelotti will have more money to spend before the transfer window closes. The club said that if the manager feels that some more reinforcements are needed before the start of the season, he will be facilitated.
During the current transfer window, Ancelotti has made one big purchase, the Liverpool midfielder Yossi Benayoun for 5 Million pounds.
The new recruit has been bothered by a groin problem since joining The Blues, but is expected to be part of the squad when Chelsea tour Germany.
Two major players in the Chelsea squad are suffering from long term injuries, and the club is expected to make a couple of buys to cover up for the void left in the team. The number one goalkeeper at Stamford Bridge, Petr Cech, is out for long and so is defender Alex. The board said that if the manager does look for replacements, he would be handed the required money to do the business.
While talking to a news channel in England, a Chelsea official Ron Gourlay said that if Ancelotti finds a suitable replacement, then the club would have no problems in singing him. He added that the board has faith in the manager and know that whoever he picks would fit perfectly in the squad. Gourlay went on to say that due to the new rule in the Premier League of naming 25 players above the age of 21 who have been with the club for 3 years before turning 25, it is imperative that the squad is not overfilled with players that would be wasted and not be able to make the cut. He said that as of now the squad looks good, but before the window closes some player may be let go and a few may be brought in.
Gourlay also reiterated that Chelsea’s ace striker Didier Drogba is back in practice, and is by no mean on the transfer market. He said that despite the hands off warning by the club, there are certain big names that are still trying to lure the Ivorian. He added that there is no possibility of the African Striker leaving Chelsea, so the clubs interested should look elsewhere. He said that Drogba is still under contract and is also happy to be at Stamford Bridge.
Earlier, Drogba’s agent had implied during a radio interview that the Ivory Coast captain may be on his way out; he said that Manchester City was interested and talks are underway. However, later he backtracked and Chelsea offered a clear hands-off warning regarding their Golden Boot winner (29 goals in the 2009-2010 season).
Another Chelsea player, the Portuguese Midfielder Deco, has also been linked to several clubs and is expected to make his way out before the season starts. There is a strong interest from Fluminense, and a deal is believed to be in the process. Chelsea, though, has not said anything about a possible move, and instead said that Deco may be going to Brazil to visit his son who is ill.
Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has splashed a great amount of cash ever since taking over the club back in 2003. He had said at the time that he would make sure that the club finally wins the Premier League, and hired the services of some of the best players in Europe. He also signed Jose Mourinho from Porto and the Portuguese got him what he wanted: two back to back titles was clear evidence that money can buy success. Champions League success, though, has still eluded Chelsea, and Roman Abramovich has made it clear that he would not rest till The Blues get their hands on the elusive silverware along with retaining the Premier League title.
