Premier League News: Yaya Toure believes
Manchester city can end Chelsea's run
Manchester City are believed to be the team that’ll make serious inroads this season at the top of the English Premier League table. The club with cash flowing out of its coffers is believed by some to be good enough to challenge
for the title – and a 4-0 stuffing of Liverpool did much to back those statements.
One of their big money signings this season was Yaya Toure from Barcelona. With City’s game against Chelsea on the weekend wetting the appetites of many, Toure claims that City are good enough to overcome the dominant West London
club.
Last season Chelsea ended the campaign with a resounding 6-0 win and they’ve carried on the same form this time round. Carlo Ancelotti’s team have been firing on all cylinders and scoring goals for fun. The Premier League champions
have already scored 21 goals in just 5 games and maintain a 100% record so far.
Manchester city did not manage to achieve their goal of finishing 4th in the league last season but did manage to do the double over Chelsea. Toure said that there is enough depth in their team to bring the mighty Blues
back down to earth.
"We were delighted to beat them twice last season and we hope to do it again," said Toure. He added, "We need to make sure we take something from it. If we can get one point that would be great, but if we can get all three like
we did twice last season that would be fantastic.”
Toure believes the key to beating Chelsea may not only lie in attack but in a strong and sturdy defence. The former Barca midfielder said that the manager has been working hard in training sessions on defence, and added that this
season Manchester City have not conceded many goals and that is down to the commitment of the defence and the cover provided to them by the midfield.
Yaya stated, "The manager wants us to work really hard on defending every day in training because when you defend well, it gives you the chance to win games. We don't concede many goals because we are really tight as a unit and
work really hard for each other. We hope we can keep going like this.”
He went on to add, "What we will have to do is defend as a team, like we have been doing, and stay really focused. Then, when we can, we'll have to be really aggressive with them."
The Ivory Coast international said that his national team captain Didier Drogba would be the obvious threat. He said that Drogba is impossible to mark and that when a team sits down before a match to make plans against individuals
from the opposition there are always a few key areas regarding a player that are earmarked. But a player like Drogba is impossible to contain and make plans for, so if his team can tame the big Ivorian they have a good chance of holding off the champions.
"He's a goalscorer," said Toure. "All he thinks about is scoring goals. But this season he is passing well and making a lot of assists as well. That makes him a much better player.”
Toure said that Drogba has been getting better every season, and last season when he won the Golden boot he proved to all that despite not being at his best in the first half of the season he can turn it on when needed the most.
While commenting on the character of his national captain, Yaya said that Drogba had fractured his elbow in the World Cup, but as he was the most important player and captain of the team he made his way back sooner than expected. He also mentioned how integral
Drogba is to the Ivorian national side and how their hopes and successes are all down to him.
