Premier League Player Ratings: West Brom v Newcastle – Part 2
We completed our players’ ratings for West Brom players in Part 1. In Part 2, we look at some of the players who might have been the reason behind Newcastle’s 3-1 away defeat. Here are our players’ ratings for the Newcastle team:
NEWCASTLE UNITED
Tim Krul: 5.5
Not the best of games for Krul. He couldn’t do much with the goals that were scored; however, he should improve when it comes down to corner kicks and free kicks.
Danny Simpson: 5.0
He has earned himself rave reviews this season but there was no evidence of that during this match. Simpson was run ragged by Thomas and he simply had no answer to the winger’s direct running. Need to forget what happened this weekend.
Sol Campbell: 4.0
Easily the worst player on the pitch, Campbell did no justice to his reputation on his 500th Premier League appearance. The former Arsenal legend was far too slow on more than one occasion. He didn’t close down Odemwingie for the opener and his
ageing legs were tested by West Brom players throughout the 90 minutes. He also went in to the book for reckless tackling.
Steven Taylor: 5.0
Forced Carson in to a brilliant save when he headed Wayne Routledge’s cross towards goal. However, he failed to comply by his defensive duties and failed to match Odemwingie’s runs all afternoon. He nearly scored an own goal when his looped header landed
on the roof of the net.
Jose Enrique: 5.0
He has been solid for most part of the season, but he allowed Tchoyi too much time on the ball to curl home the opener. He also failed to match his opposite number and was outfoxed on a number of occasions. He was also booked.
Wayne Routledge: 6.5
The winger used the ball a lot better than most of his team mates. He was at times taken out of the game when his team resorted to poor long ball tactics. Found Taylor with a lovely cross and was one of the few positives from a largely negative game for
Newcastle United.
Danny Guthrie: 4.5
He should have been the key for Newcastle; however he failed to make any kind of an impression and was run over by the Baggies midfield. His slip let to Odemwingie’s goal which made it 2-0. In the process, he got himself injured and was replaced by Smith
immediately.
Cheikh Tiote: 5.0
One of the surprises of the season, Tiote had a bad day at the office. He alongside Guthrie failed to win the midfield battle and this was where the actual battle was lost as Baggies' 5-man midfield dominated the play.
Jonas Gutierrez: 5.5
He looks to do well until he gets near the box. Often found the first man when crossing and failed to come up with a real output from his runs down the left hand side flank. He desperately needs to work on his end product.
Andy Carroll: 5.5
The big centre forward failed to produce any sort of magic. Wasted a good chance to play in Lovenkrand. However, he rose highest to set up Lovenkrand for the Newcastle goal. A rare off day for the English International.
Shola Ameobi: 5.0
Captain for the day, he failed to direct his header in the first half from a corner. He was taken off after 1st half to be replaced by Lovenkrand.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
Alan Smith: 5.0
A typical reckless display by the former Manchester United man, Alan Smith went in to the book soon after making his introduction in the 73rd minute.
Peter Lovenkrand: 6.5
The Danish international made full use of the 45 minutes he was given. His pace gave Baggies all sorts of problems and had it not been for the poor pass from Carroll and excellent goal keeping by Carson, he might just have changed the game for Newcastle.
He scored the only goal for Newcastle.
Nile Ranger: 5.0
He was brought on to make it 3 up front for the last minutes. He was unnoticeable during his little stint.
