Premier League Preview: Top 5 buys this summer

The transfer window in European football is still open, but the season is about to begin and it is time to see which club made bagged the best deal this season. Here are just few of the buys that were made this season and a look at what impact they might be able to make.

Javier Hernandez, Manchester United
The most exciting piece of business this season in English football looks to be Javier Hernandez’s arrival at Manchester United. When Sir Alex Ferguson said that he wants to buy the young South American, the general reaction from fans all over was "Javier who?" especially from the bunch that were critical of the Glazer regime and were protesting that Ferguson is short on funds to sign big names this season.
It was in May when Javier Hernandez’s name was announced by Manchester United, and fans who had never heard of him said that Wayne Rooney once again would have to carry the team on his own throughout the season.
However soon in the World Cup, Hernandez proved that the master (Ferguson) had once again secured a bargain deal. He was signed for just 7 Million pounds and during the World Cup everyone got to see what potential the young Mexican has. A brilliant goal against Argentina was clear evidence of that.
Hernandez has already scored 2 goals for Manchester United; first one was in United States when the club was on a pre season tour. His first official goal came when Manchester United took on Chelsea in the season’s curtain raiser, community shield. Although the ball eventually went in off his face it was still clear that he has what it takes to make it in English football.  United players who have already played with him pre season are all very excited about the 22 year old and say that he is a player made to play for United, and all are expecting big things from him.

Joe Cole, Liverpool
Next man in the list has to be Joe Cole. Although the man is no stranger to English football, having played all his life in England, he did make a big move from one of the biggest clubs in England to one that, once, was one of the biggest.
As far as the business side of the deal is concerned, it would not have been any better for Liverpool. Cole had finished his contract with Chelsea and was a free agent so he was snapped up for free by the Reds. The former West Ham player is still only 28 years old and has plenty on his CV to prove that he is one of the best English football has to offer. His former team mate and captain John Terry had said that in England team there are only 2 players that have the ability to open up defences on any given day, Wayne Rooney and Joe Cole. Now being compared to the best English striker, it does say a lot about the potential of the man. Not that he needs any comments to back up his talents, as he has been one of the key players in Chelsea over the last few years. Since making the move from West Ham United he won 3 Premier League titles, 3 FA cups and 2 League championships with the Blues.

Jermaine Beckford, Everton
Jermaine may not be a name known to fans all over England, Everton though are very excited about the 26 year old.  While playing for Leeds he scored 72 goals in 126 games in League one. His most famous strike by far has been the winning goal against Manchester United in FA cup. The fact that he was signed on a free transfer by David Moyes also makes it a good piece of business.

Jerome Boateng, Manchester City
The strongly built defender from Germany seems to be tailor made for English game. He showed enough promise in the World Cup to earn a call up from the cash rich Manchester City.
He is a versatile defender and can play in the centre of defence as well as on the flanks.

Laurent Koscielny, Arsenal
Arsenal who let go 3 defenders after the end of last season; Sol Campbell, Mikel Silvestre and William Gallas were in desperate need of a quality defender. They have found a young man who is seen by many as one of the best defenders to come out of France in years. He is also eligible to play for Poland with his mother being Polish. However, he has expressed his desire to play for France. Arsene Wenger believes that he can be a capable long term partner for Thomas Vermaelen in the centre of defence.
