Premier League Preview: Wolverhampton Wanderers versus Liverpool
Liverpool manager, Kenny Dalglish turns his attention to conquering the Wolves in an attempt to attain a Reds victory, a feat he has not managed since his recent term as a manager begun.
A Reds win at the Molineux may seem unlikely as the Wolves have not succumbed to Liverpool on their home turf in the past thirty years. When Dalglish was a Liverpool player himself, his last four matches against the Wolves at Molineux ended in draws.
Steven Gerrard has backed the Reds legend dubbed King Kenny, to stay on in the club’s managerial chair even after the five-month period he was initially awarded for the position. The captain and the other Anfield faithful recognise the glory brought to the
Kop during Dalglish’s thirteen year reign as a player and manager, although it seems that the Liverpool’s on field performance has not substantially improved since Roy Hodgson’s departure from Anfield.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are in an even worse position, wallowing in the 19th spot, fearing relegation. Mick McCarthy’s side may be riding high on confidence, winning four out of their eight previous Premier League fixtures including matches against
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 in the League since 1950, but won against the Reds when playing at Anfield earlier on in the 2010-11 season.
McCarthy’s team have not been defeated by the Kop side in their previous six matches when playing at the Molineux, having won three and drawn three. The last time a Reds victory was recorded on Wolves turf in the Premier League was in April 1979, a match
which saw Alan Hansen score the only goal. Kenny Dalglish himself managed to score two goals in March 1978 against Wolves, in a match which ended 3-1. That was Dalglish’s first away match at the Molineux, but he could not manage the same feat in his next five
trips to the Molineux when still a player.
Both sides have played 22 matches in the 2010-11 season, with Liverpool gaining 26 points and currently occupying the 13th spot in the table. McCarthy’s men have managed 21 points and sit in the relegation zone, having lost 13 matches, which is
the most any team in the Premier League has lost in the season.
Liverpool have lost 10 matches and drawn half of that number, but won seven compared to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wolves-c40952’ six. McCarthy’s men have managed three draws so far in their campaign and have scored 24 goals. The Anfield side have managed to score three more goals than their
opponents and have conceded 31 compared to Wolves 38.
Wolves have had an unstable form in their last eight matches, having alternated between four wins and four defeats. They have managed to improve on their woeful defensive form which they displayed earlier on in their campaign, having not been able to keep
a clean sheet in their first sixteen fixtures of the 2010-11 season.
Now McCarthy’s side will face the Reds having acquired three clean sheets in their previous six games played in the top flight.
Wolves have acquired the services of Adam Hammill and the player may be fielded on Saturday against Liverpool. David Edwards looks set to recover from his hamstring problem, however George Elokobi will miss the fixture due to his three-match ban.
Liverpool’s injury list includes http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Steven-Gerrard-c34196 will be unable to play this match due to a suspension, and Milan Jovanovic may be doubtful because of an illness.
