Premier League Review: Tottenham vs. Liverpool – Late goal by Lennon sinks Liverpool (Part 1)
Liverpool travelled to North London to take on Tottenham in what was guaranteed to be a nail bitter of a match. Both the teams had won their respective games this past weekend and Tottenham even managed to beat Arsenal for the first time
away from home since 1993. Liverpool on the other hand were finally picking up and were now looking to break into the top half of the table.
Along with that the match between both sides was scheduled to be one to watch for another reason as well. If both the teams scored tonight then it would be the first time since the start of the Premier League that all twenty teams managed
to find the back of the net in a round of matches. Along with that the weekend would also manage to be the highest scoring one in the history of the Premier League.
The match kicked off with both the teams looking to go at it from the very first minute. Both Liverpool and Tottenham were retaining healthy possession of the ball and were getting some decent touches of the ball early on.
Things however took a toll for the worse for Tottenham in the eleventh minute. Rafael Van der Vaart, managed to play a back heel in the Liverpool box, but while doing so, the player managed to pull his hamstring. The hamstring had been
giving him some serious trouble formerly and as a result of the injury he was replaced by Jermain Defoe.
The match however managed to continue once the player was replaced and it was Liverpool who had the first real chance of the night via Maxi. Torres ran past Gallas and left him for dead before teeing up Maxi around twenty yards from the
Tottenham goal. However the midfielder whipped in a shot that took a decent save from Gomes.
The next chance fell to Tottenham via Luka Modric. The midfielder managed to find space before firing low into the goal. Reina got their in time to parry it away, but the ball fell to Defoe who was about to unleash the killer blow, but
Jamie Carraghar almost uncharacteristically dove in to make a superb blocking tackle.
On the forty third minute Liverpool finally took the lead. Raul Meireles floated in a brilliantly placed free kick and Martin Skrtel managed to head the ball which bounced around before following into the feet of the defender, who then
had the simple task of tapping the ball into the net. The defender did just that and gave Liverpool the lead just before the end of the first half.
