Premier League Review: Tottenham vs. Liverpool – Late goal by Lennon sinks Liverpool (Part 2)
However in the stoppage time of the first half, Liverpool could have easily been two goals up. Both Maxi and Torres had two fine chances but were denied from converting on both the occasions. The first half eventually came to an end with
Liverpool looking to be the stronger side among the two.
The second half kicked off in almost the same manner as the first ended. Torres once again found himself in front of the Tottenham goal and he was once again blocked off by Bassong with a brilliantly timed tackle.
However from then on it was all Tottenham in the second half. Bale went close on the fifty second minute and his shot was kept out by Meireles who had to block the shot off the line.
Eight minutes later Tottenham were awarded a penalty and Defoe stepped up to take it. Deofe blasted his shot wide of the post, however even if he had kept it on target, chances were that Reina would have stopped it since he dived in the
right way in the first place.
Just when it seemed like Liverpool might just ride out this match on top, lady luck managed to land in Tottenham's favour. Modric glided in a brilliantly positioned cross towards Peter Crouch and with the striker rising to meet it, Skrtel
saved him the trouble by prodding it into his own goal before the ball even reached the striker.
As a result of the goal, Skrtel managed to join the exclusive list of players to have scored on both sides of the pitch for both the teams.
The game managed to settle down a bit from then on, however despite that fact it was Tottenham who still looked to be the more lethal side on the night.
On the eighty ninth minute it seemed like Tottenham had taken the lead. Crouch flicked on a free kick towards Lennon, who headed it into the path of Defoe who blasted the ball into the back of the net. Tottenham were made to however contain
their celebrations as the goal was ruled offside and it was back to the drawing board for the home side.
Two minutes into stoppage time, the story was quite different. Assou-Ekotto played in a long ball into the Tottenham area, the ball was then flicked on by Crouch into the path of Lennon. Lennon zipped past the slow Konchesky and then beat
Reina with the goal at his mercy. Despite getting his hands to it Reina just couldn't keep the ball out and Tottenham ended the game with the three points, thanks to a very very late goal thanks to Lennon.
