Premier League Round Up: Arsenal – 13 January 2011
Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger is not willing to sign up http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Sol-Campbell-c33757 for the third time as a make shift defender. The manager has played down rumours linking the 36-year-old defender back to Arsenal and claimed he has not had
a word with Newcastle United.
With first choice defenders http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Thomas-Vermaelen-c35002 and Sebastien Squillaci facing long term injuries, ruling them out of the current season, Arsenal look to get one centre back to cover for the injured players. Campbell returned to Arsenal
last season during this time and managed 11 appearances with his formal club. However, the 36-year-old was impressive in his half season with the side.
"Sol Campbell is at Newcastle. We have not been in touch with him, no," stated the Arsenal boss. Arsenal were pathetic in their recent Carling Cup fixture against Championship side Ipswich Town. Despite employing most of their
first team players, including the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Andrei-Arshavin-c5771, Ipswich played beautiful football, while Arsenal were just average.
However, the side is being tipped as the favourite to lift the cup this season, but now, they have to win the return fixture at Emirates by, at least, a 2-goal margin against Everton. With first choice defenders injured, Arsenal
would want to play their best team in order to book a place in the final. Failure to do that would mean Arsenal would have to live another season without a trophy.
The Gunners have no chance of winning any other trophy apart from the League Cup this season. They are currently four points behind leaders Manchester United, with the Red Devils having a match to play. In the FA Cup, Arsenal have
to go through a lot of English sides, which are simply better in cup competitions than them. In the UEFA Champions league, the side faces an in-form Barcelona, who are just unstoppable this season. Last year, Barcelona thrashed Arsenal 6-3 on aggregate, with
a 4-1 bashing at Nou Camp. However, this time Barcelona are current favourites of lifting the cup and Arsenal would not be able to put up much of a fight against the Catalan Giants.
Arsenal now travel to Upton Park to face West Ham United in the Premier League and would want a favourable result in order to keep the title chase on this season. On the other hand, all eyes would be on the Red Devils when they
travel to White Hart Lane this Sunday. Any points dropped there would strengthen Arsenal’s chances of winning the Premier League title this season.
