Premier League Round Up: Arsenal - 6th January 2011
Arsenal has labelled the coming 14 days to be decisive for the future of defender http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Thomas-Vermaelen-c35002 at the North London club.
It has been confirmed that the central defender is close to making his comeback following his return to out-of-doors training this week. The player suffered with an Achilles concern and manager Arsene Wenger was positive about
the Belgian’s return. Yet, Wenger has confirmed that he would have to keep a close check on the player’s condition in the coming weeks and would make his decision by the end of January. Vermaelen has not featured for the Gunners since the August, but he is
expected to be back by the end of the month. Should he not make it by that day, Wenger may be forced to bring in a new centre back as a covering for the 24-year-old.
"Thomas is just on the fringe of getting back on the pitch again. The next ten days to two weeks will be an important test for him and hopefully he can get through well. We will see. At the moment everyone at the club looks positive
but I will have to make a decision before the end of January," stated the Arsenal manager.
Arsenal is short of defensive options this season and while being exceptional on the attack, the side has shown weakness in front of their own goal. The side needs solid defenders to cope with the all-attacking English style of
play and this has been the major reason behind their trophy drought over the past half decade. Former Blackburn skipper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Christopher-Samba-c9212 can be a good option, as the player has expressed his desire to leave the club. The player is tall and very strongly built
and is good in set piece situations, both on the attack and defence, which makes him a complete centre back. Wenger is wise enough to address the crisis of his back line, but is currently of the mind to wait on the fitness level of Thomas Vermaelen.
