Premier League Second Half Report: Newcastle vs. Liverpool (Part 3)
On the seventy eighth minute, Gutierrez was booked for a silly tug on Johnson, who did brilliantly to get past two players before being held back.
The yellow card seemed to do little to hold Newcastle back as the team then went on to score another goal just two minutes later. It was Carroll and Barton once again, who produced the lethal combination for the home side. Carroll leaped
in the air to flick a ball downwards and after another error by Skrtel left Barton free on goal to prod the ball past the out stretched Reina. The goal was the second goal of the season for the midfielder and the second for Newcastle on the night.
Three minutes after the goal, Tiote became the second Newcastle player to go in the book. The player took down Torres and received the yellow, but didn't seem to mind as it helped break down a Liverpool attack.
Just when it looked like Liverpool were running out of options, Hodgson went on to replace Maxi and brought on Milan Jovanovic to replace the player. However almost immediately after that Padrew made another change as well, he went on
to replace Nolan with Alan Smith, to try and get another goal on the board for the home side.
Neither one of the substitutions seemed to do the trick for either side, as no chance was created by either of the teams. On the ninetieth minute Liverpool came the closest as Krul came off his line to claim a corner, but Johnson who managed
to beat the keeper with his head also managed to beat the post and the ball sailed well over the woodwork.
The referee signalled the addition of four minutes at the end of the forty five minutes of the second half and it looked like Newcastle would be cruising to the three points.
Almost immediately on the break from that attack from Liverpool, Newcastle scored their third via Carroll. The striker turned nearly twenty five yards from Reina's goal and smashed a shot into the bottom corner, leaving the keeper with
no chance at stopping his effort on goal. As a result the player scored his tenth goal of the season and Newcastle's third on the night.
With just seconds left to play, Danny Guthrie was brought on to replace Barton, to waste some time. The substitution seemed to do the trick as almost immediately after the referee blew the whistle to signal the end of the game, which saw
Newcastle go on and score three goals past Liverpool and into the top half of the table above Liverpool.
