Aston Villa entered the second half of this encounter at the Stadium of Light trailing by one goal. Gerard Houllier made no changes to his team, as the visitors started the second half with the same first team.
During the first few minutes, Aston Villa dominated the possession and did some neat passing. Meanwhile, the Black Cats of Steve Bruce looked calm and absolutely brilliant defensively.
After the hour mark, the visitors increased the pace of the game and started to attack more. It looked like the Villains had entered second half with more attacking intent.
Without a doubt, the visitors were a better team in the second half of the match, and they were growing in confidence by retaining possession of the ball.
But then Steve Bruce brought in the World Cup star of Ghana, Asamoah Gyan, and after that, Sunderland started to dominate the game in the last stages of this crucial encounter. They looked very dangerous in front. The home side
did create some chances but failed to capitalize on them.
On the other hand, Aston Villa tried their level best to find an equaliser for their own goal. The new manager of Aston Villa, Gerard Houllier, was forced to make a change when Stilian Petrov got injured. Steve Sidwell came in
place of injured Petrov but failed to put on an impressive performance.
In the dying stages of this Premier League encounter, the visitors tried to level the match but Sunderland’s defence looked formidable. Even after inducting their impact substitute players, Aston Villa failed to score a single
goal. The home side managed to get another clean sheet.
Sunderland managed to earn all three points from this tough fixture. Along with that, the Black Cats continued their unbeaten home form.
