Premier League Weekend's Winners and Losers – Part 4
LOSERS - Continued
Chelsea – Old isn’t always Gold
The combined age of the three Chelsea goal scorers from last night was 94 and had it not been for a defensive error in the 93rd minute, Chelsea would have been celebrating a brilliant comeback.
However, it wasn’t to be and Chelsea now sit firmly in 5th with 7 points behind league leaders Manchester United who also have a game in hand.
Is time up for this generation of footballers at Stamford Bridge? Well, by the look of things it probably has. With no real talent coming through from the academy, it seems an odd time for the Russian owner to keep his cheque book in the drawer.
Chelsea look far from the team which won the double last season and made that blistering start to the season when they left everyone for dead. Now it’s their time to feel the depression they had caused to most teams earlier in the season.
With just 2 wins from their last nine matches, Chelsea are now fifth best in the race for title. Some would suggest that their target for the season might now have changed from 1st to 4th. It is just incredible to see such demise.
Recently, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 have made winning
the Champions League a priority over Premier League.
Lee Mason – Master of Consistency, NOT!
The man who is usually a lot more reliable than http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chris-c9006 Foy, made some startling decisions in the game between Chelsea and Aston Villa. Here are the stats to prove it:
Number of fouls committed by Aston Villa players: 11
Number of bookings for Aston Villa players: 7
Number of fouls committed by Chelsea players: 18
Number of bookings for Chelsea players: 2
Alex McLeish – sees only what he wants to see
The Birmingham boss had every right to be upset about Robin van Persie’s handball which wasn’t spotted by the referee.
However, apart from that he was just coming up with things to say. Firstly, his accusation that Arsenal received two or three of the free-kicks in dubious category was totally out of place. Incidentally, Arsenal won fewer free kicks than any other side in
the league this weekend and on the other hand Birmingham’s only two meaningful chances came via two dubiously awarded free kicks.
Even more amazing was the fact that he was able to spot van Persie’s hand ball from 50 yards but when quizzed about the catalogue of rash challenges by Lee Bowyer – which were committed just in front of him – his reply was "I didn't see them".
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lee-Bowyer-c21864 – really stupid
He made some obnoxious challenges during Birmingham’s 3-0 loss at home to Arsenal. He failed to get a grip on the fluent football played by the Gunners so he decided to fly in to tackles.
He will be suspended for his challenge on Sagna but it could have been a lot worse had he made a proper contact with the Frenchman.
Carlos Tevez – an unlucky inclusion in the list
Manchester City’s skipper has his mood swings which he doesn’t show on the pitch. If he loses out on the Golden Boot award by a goal or two, he will look back to this weekend’s game and regret it big time.
Apart from missing from the penalty spot, Tevez also squandered 3 glorious opportunities. It was just one of those days when the ball seemed to drift away from goal all the time. City managed 22 shots on goal and astonishingly only 19 were on target – that
is actually quite embarrassing.
