Premier League Weekends Winners and Losers – Part 1
WINNERS
Manchester United – A walk in the park
We are pretty sure that even Manchester United doesn’t know how they keep on doing it. They have hardly set the premier League alight this season with their football, and yet they find themselves top of the table with at least a game in hand over most of
their rivals.
Against West Brom, they were lucky (as always), with one penalty decision and then the penalty miss, after that everyone knows what happened – the usual stuff i.e. United scored late on to win the game.
The worry at the moment for everyone else is that if United are walking at the moment, what would they do if they stepped up a gear or two. Manchester United don’t really need to change anything, they might just win the league without breaking a sweat, especially
if other teams around them keep failing with their current consistency.
Manchester City – ‘Small-club mentality’? Really?
City players were touted for having ‘small-club’ mentality by Sir Alex, earlier in the season, but they are level on points with their arch rivals and are matching them stride to stride.
City registered yet another win and are looking like genuine title contenders. Sir Alex might have to eat up his own words, come May 2011.
Arsenal – The sick and slick
Before we jump up to start praising this Arsenal side, there are some prominent flaws in their defence that need a mention. Statistically this arsenal side isn’t at their best when defending from set pieces, yet they were guilty of giving away needless free
kicks in dangerous areas.
Furthermore they were pretty poor when it came to trying to defend them. Had it not been for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lukasz-Fabianski-c22910, Birmingham might have clawed their way back into the game.
Apart from that, it is hard to find any other flaw in this Arsenal side, especially when they have the ball at their feet.
Fabregas and Nasri stole the show in the middle of the park in almost a similar fashion to how Xavi and Iniesta do it for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Spain-c3011 and Barcelona. It was nothing less than a treat to watch Arsenal play especially towards the end of the second half.
However, they have a tougher task ahead against Manchester City. It really would test their title credentials.
Liverpool - double winners
Anfield took a huge sigh of relief when the final whistle blew at Anfield on Saturday. They had overcome a defiant Bolton side courtesy of a stoppage time winner by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Joe-Cole-c18694.
It is difficult to see how the relationship between the fans and the boss will be repaired but the manner in which the players responded, it showed they wanted to go out and do it for...emm the fans or the manager, can’t be sure really.
Nevertheless, it was a victory for Liverpool football club. Torres finally got back on the score sheet and Steven Gerrard’s performance would have filled http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 fans with hope for the upcoming fixtures.
One interesting statistic was the fact that Liverpool had an attendance of only 35,400 – their lowest since their game against Portsmouth in 2004. Booing isn’t the only way of showing dissent and disgust.
John W. Henry was clear in his objectives that opinions of the Liverpool fans will be regarded in the highest esteem and their voices will be heard. If that is the case than Roy Hodgson is surely a dead man walking – another victory for Liverpool football
club.
Tottenham Hotspur - no.1?
Spurs are now unbeaten in their last 11 games while http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gareth-Bale-c14422 has scored 11 goals this season. Their latest triumph came on 1-1-11 and emm.... well they play with 11 men on the field (just wanted couple more 1’s).
Does this really mean the Tottenham will finish the season at no.1?
