Premiership drop-out Leeds Carnegie signs Andy Titterrell as new skipper – Rugby news
Headingly based English professional rugby union club, Leeds Carnegie, has confirmed the signing and appointment of former England international hooker Andy Titterrell on a two-year deal.  Alongside the deal, Titterrell is given
the responsibility of captaining the side as the club plans for their campaign for return to the top level English rugby.
Officials have confirmed Titterrell’s signing and new responsibilities as captain of Leeds Carnegie in a statement released on the club’s official website on Wednesday June 8. The signing of Titterrell is a major boost for Leeds
Carnegie who at the end of the 2010/11 season was relegated from the Premiership.
Leeds Carnegie head coach, Diccon Edwards, has welcomed the appointment of the new skipper. He praised Titterrell and said, “Titterrell was a natural choice as his captain. He is everything that epitomises the attitude we want to bring to our squad next
season. His attitude, dedication and loyalty to club are an example to every player.”
Kent born Titterrell started his professional senior rugby career with Saracens. In 2001, he joined the Sales Sharks, remained there for six seasons, and made 122 appearances. At the start of the 2008/09 premiership season, Titterrell
joined Gloucester Rugby. He made 29 appearances for the Gloucester Rugby and had to compete with their star hooker, Olivier Azam, for a place in the regular side.
The 30-year-old Titterrell moved to Leeds Carnegie on loan in November 2009. Later he was given a full time contract and he played a pivotal role in the team’s effort to retain their Premiership place.
Titterrell has expressed his delight on again becoming a part of the team and expressed his optimism at contributing towards the team as player and leader. Commenting on his appointment as the captain, Titterrell thanked the club
management and the coaches for the trust they have showed in him. He said, “It is a massive honour to be asked to captain any team but especially so by Leeds Carnegie in the position that we find ourselves. I was honoured to be asked to give my input into
how we rebuild the club and I know that we will be able to put Leeds back on the map.”
During November 2010, Titterrell sustained a serious knee injury that cut short his 2010/11 Premiership season.  Following the injury, his knee was operated on and he is yet to attain 100% fitness level.
Titterrell, who is a versatile back row forward player, has expressed his confidence in the fact that he will recover from the injury at the start of next season. He further added that he is using the time smartly and slowly building
pressure on his knee.
Leeds Carnegie will start their campaign for a return to premiership with the pre-season preparations matches in August 2011.
