Premio Loco once again against the talent packed field of the Nayef Joel Stakes (British Champions Series)
Giving the £56,710 prize money of the Group 2 Nayef Joel Stakes (British Champions Series) a shot for the third time in a row is the eight-year-old chestnut gelding, Premio Loco. To become successful after failing twice before, the 9 to 1 entry will have to take down Most Improved, Sovereign Debt, Trumpet Major and Side Glance. The third race on the second day of the Cambridgeshire meeting has attracted eleven three-year-old and above contestants.
Twelve months ago, Prized’s chestnut gelding, Premio Loco, settled second behind the Charles Hills' trained winner, Ransom Note. George Baker’s ride missed the visit to the winner’s enclosure by 2 ¼ lengths.
Taking the third position was, Poet’s Voice.
Two seasons down from now, the Chris Wall trained ended eighth in the line-up of nine while the prize money was claimed by Roger Charlton’s entry, Cityscape.
Wall said: "We haven't had that much rain and long may that continue, so the ground shouldn't be too bad. He's in good form so we hope he'll run well again. He's had no interruptions to his programme. Everything's gone according to plan."
The chances seem pretty concrete this time due to the ground conditions coupled with the recent success in the Group 2 Betfair Celebration Mile on 25th August, 2012 at Goodwood over a mile. The mile’s distance was good to soft, and today he will race over the identical distance with good ground conditions.
The Group 2 event today will make it a ninth time that the Bernard Westley owned will race among the graded company.
The gelding will enjoy the trip over the quick ground with jockey, George Baker and the duo has drawn the second stall.
The fifth position holder of the Premio Loco’s most react success, Trumpet Major, is backed by 8 to 1 odds and has the stable jockey, Richard Hughes, to guide him through the track distance.
The handler commented:
“He had shown plenty of guts to share a dead-heat on good ground in the Thoroughbred Stakes at the Glorious meeting and if the rain stays away, he won't be far away."
Despite the overwhelming improved form of Premio Loco, the level of competition in the field today will make it an interesting clash between the neck-to-neck rivals.
