Premio Loco steams in for Criterion Stakes win
The old saying is that good horses make good jockeys but Jack Mitchell made a good job of winning on Premio Loco at Newmarket.
The young jockey claimed the biggest victory of his career when Premio Loco won the Group Three Sunley Criterion Stakes with a late burst of speed.
Premio Loco had been ridden by George Baker for his last eight wins but, with that jockey suspended, he had Mitchell in the saddle for the first time and at least 8lbs more on his back than any of his eight rivals, which was the penalty for winning a pair of Group Two races in Germany last season.
However, nothing stopped Premio Loco, who was held up at the back of the field by Mitchell as Red Jazz set the gallop. Two-and-a-half furlongs out, Premio Loco was making progress but Mitchell still waited to make his decisive move. It came just before the furlong pole as he burst past Red Jazz to win by three-quarters of a length with Doncaster Rover in third.
Mitchell had served his apprenticeship with Premio Loco’s trainer, Chris Wall, and was delighted to get the call once Baker was unavailable. “It’s just unfortunate for George Baker – he was banned today – but thank God I got the ride on him. He’s a lovely horse, skipped off the ground and, just when I needed to, pushed the button.
“I know he’s got a lot of weight but he carried me all the way to the line.”
Wall said that Premier Loco could be heading for the Group Two Summer Mile at Ascot next month.
Laaheb showed that the step up to 12 furlongs was not a problem when he won the Listed Betfair Fred Archer Stakes and Khor Sheed looks a two-year-old with a future. Luca Cumani’s filly may have been the only maiden in the totesport.com Empress Stakes but that tag went in the 1minute 13.23seconds it took her to win by a length.
