  1. if you use the cheap gas you can notice a problem with detonation and performance, but with the computers as they are you would not notice a single ping before the cpu would take over. you will notice a changer in gas mileage and power, though.

  2. check the Owner's Guide. Look in the index under Fuel or Octane Rating. It should tell you the minimum octane rating. My '97 Explorer and '00 Police Interceptor both take 87 octane, otherwise known as regular.

  3. yes it will effect it down the road, could have expensive engine repairs.

  4. Yes it does matter, that's why they say use premium.

Two years ago I had a customer who came into my shop every few months to have his Check Engine Light shut off - it was triggering a catalytic converter fault on his Maxima because he refused to use the 91 octane recommended by Nissan and filled with 87 instead.  He ended up with a bill for $800 for a new catalytic converter.  At $0.20 per gallon saved you would need to buy how many gallons to save $800?

  5. Not according to this article:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/03/automo...

But what that article does NOT mention is that turbo engines NEED premium (I know because I have a turbo engine and I did some extensive research).

    good Luck...
