I drive a 92 Chevrolet Camaro RS..V8

i've been driving it for about 2 years and have always used the unleaded gas but today a co-worker told me i should use premium because it'll be better for the car, it only takes me $40 to fill up my car but it does burn it fast....is there really a difference? would trying a different kind of gas do anything to the car, especially if i decide to switch back to unleaded?

  1. As said above, see what your owners manual recomends.  Also sometimes the grade of fuel is inside the filler cover.

I'm not sure what you mean by unleaded - all fuel is now unleaded.

If your car's ECU can automatically compensate for the type of fuel, either advance or r****d the timing based on the type of fuel put in it, then higher octane may make it run better.   But, if you have been using Regular unleaded and it doesn't ping (pre-detonate) then what you're using is OK.

  2. Read the owners manual - if it says Premium gasoline use it, if it doesn't then don't use it. I made that mistake and had to replace my catylactic converter.

What happens is if you car is designed to work on unleaded regular and you use premium it doesn't burn the gasoline all the way and the residue builds up on the plates inside your converter causing it to be less efficient and it will cause the plates to burn up making the converter no good. Happened on my 97 Saturn SL2 - $1400 later (in 2002) I learned my lesson.

If the owners manual doesn't call for Premium fuel don't use it.
