Prep School Volleyball Tournament in Jamaica – Volleyball news
Be it the very modern cities of the world or distant Caribbean Islands, the beautiful sport of volleyball is played in every nook and cranny of the world.
Quite recently, the Jamaican Volleyball Association (JaVA) created a wonderful volleyball event for the young aspiring athletes in St Ann, Jamaica. Several school volleyball teams joined the tournament, while the Steer Town boys’ team settled for the top
position.
They posted a 3-0 (25-8, 25-15, 25-8) victory over St Anns Bay team in the final match on Saturday.
The Steer Town dominated the opposite side throughout the match. The team showed great consistency in attack and defence, which helped them capture the opening set of the match with big margin of 17 points. The St Anns Bay team was composed of inexperienced
players and could not give a good competition to Steer Town.
Nonetheless, the St Anns boys put up good effort in the second set of the match. Comparatively saying, the team performed much better in the second set but still it was not enough to overcome the resilient rival. The charged-up Steer Town attackers came
strong on the rival side and claimed second set, 25-15.
The loss of two consecutive sets totally dragged the St Anns team under pressure. They made unforced mistakes and suffered many setbacks. The Steer Town continued with hard-hitting and finished the final set of the game by sending 25-8 on board.
The final match was followed by a closing ceremony of the tournament. The President of the Jamaica Volleyball Association, Warrenton Dixon, distributed the accolades and also talked about various aspect of the game. He emphasised on the need of sponsors
as JaVA does not have a lot of funds to organise bigger events.
He stated, “We cannot achieve all our objectives without funding support; therefore we will continue to invite Corporate Jamaica to invest in our developmental programme. Nonetheless, until such time, we will continue to do what we can with the little we
have because at the end of the day the objectives are ours.”
Steer Town won the final match and qualified for the national finals, which are scheduled to be held on April 13 in Kingston.
Moreover, the runner-up team of the tournament earned a wild-card entry in the National Final. Hence, both top teams of the zone will clawed their way to the national finals.
The Jamaica national finals will feature approximately 150 children from 15 schools. The Steer Town is now eyeing the national title. The team is currently enjoying a great rhythm and tone, and it is expected that they will keep the momentum going. There
is not much time left in the start of national finals and soon the fifteen best school teams will come into stride.
