  1. I would really just concern myself with the physical aspect first. Shooting a pellet gun vs a real gun are two EXTREMELY different things. The only way you can truly practice marksmanship is to shoot a real gun that is either the same or similar to what your going to be firing.

  2. I agree with hookem.  Read the book.  I suggest shooting between swimming and running once you find a target range.  Some ranges will rent you a rifle and train you to shoot.  Also go visit a VFW and find a Vet, they may help you.

  3. Don't worry about marksmanship, it will be a miracle if you get that far.

  4. Marksmanship is the least of your worries at BUD/S. Contrary to what someone said, students have very little to no training on firearms prior to BUD/S. With the Navy now training sailors solely on the M9 handgun and Mossberg 500 shotgun and training on the M-16 discontinued, most SEAL applicants have very little marksmanship skill on a rifle. You will be taught a different way to use firearms and be more proficient so it's no use in learning your own method when it will be changed later on. Instructors will teach you to become proficient in using weapons the SEAL way even if you have no prior experience, some of the most proficient shooters in the Teams had not even fired an assault rifle before BUD/S. Good luck.

  5. You will learn your basic marksmanship long before the SEALS when you join the military. All will be taught. Sure you could go to a range or whatnot but that is not the key. Anybody can carry a weapon and shoot.

Think of all of the people who try out or even get to where they can try out. The key is having a way of thinking outside of the box. Reading, knowing some history, some knowledge of cultures, languages.... smarts. It is a way of thinking that counts.

  6. Swim your butt off... every single day.

Run your butt off, every single day.  Then swim some more.  Then more.  You have to be really good in the water.  It needs to be second nature.

Maybe you ought to read "Lone Survivor" by Marcus LAttrell.  The first half of it has really good info on BUD/S and what the training is like, as well as ways to prepare for and descrip[tions of Indoc and each phase of BUD/S.

  7. Any serious shooter of ANY discipline or any style, caliber or action of weapon will tell you that the most used, most valuable firearm they own is a .22LR. Try to find at least one similar to what you expect to be shooting (semi-auto, rifle, revolver, whatever... Ruger 10/22's are a great place to start, and continue to use for a long time to come).

The key to excellent marksmanship is to learn the fundamentals of stance, sight alignment, breath control and trigger control. After that, it's easy. Just practice, practice, practice, practice, practice, practice.. Good luck.

PS. From reading the other answers regarding the seals in general, I think I may have misread the question. I thought you were asking about building marksmanship skills. Sorry if I missed the point.
