Preparation for Masters: Charl Schwartzel finishes tied for fifth in the Honda Classic - Golf News
The Masters Champion, Charl Schwartzel, finished tied for fifth, along with Justin Rose, in the Honda Classic, played at the PGA National Champion Course, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, from March 1 to 4, 2012.
Looking confident to defend his title in the first week of April, Charl recorded a seven-under par tournament score in the Honda Classic event.
The three-under par 67 score in the third round placed him five strokes off the lead and ranked him seventh on the leaderboard.
After his round, he talked to the media and said, “Today was definitely, by far, the hardest day we have had out of the three days”.
Schwartzel further said, “I got off to a flying start, hit the ball beautifully, and made some good putts”.
He added, “Just unfortunate, a bit of a wait we had on 11. I just made a poor shot that ended up costing me a double bogey. Fortunately, I got off to a good start, so still in the mix”.
Therefore, he kicked off his final round on Sunday in a confident way with a birdie-par-birdie to go two-under par early in the round.
However, two bogeys that came on par-three fifth and the other to start his back-nine offset the birdie shots to force the score to level to par.
His birdie on the par-four 12th proved to be his last shot other than pars. He finished one-under par 69, which again placed him five shots off the lead to end the tournament.
According to Schwartzel, he was overall satisfied with his performance and confident to get into perfect form before the first major event of the year.
He went on to say that he sometimes, however, failed to capitalize the opportunities of making birdie shots, which he thinks, played a crucial role for not getting much closer to the leader of the tournament.
Yet, he managed to end the tournament among the top five positions on the leaderboard, which is enough for him to boost his morale.
Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy, who shot 12-under par tournament score raised the winning trophy and surged to atop the Official World Golf Rankings, displacing Luke Donald on the first position.
