I'm a high school senior considering a railroad career. I attended rail camp and volunteer at a local tourist railroad. Can anyone suggest any helpful advise for pursuing this career?

  1. Dont give Dont give up Dont give up

Apply to as many railroads as you can

Be ready to move if need be

Learn as much as you can go to the tracks speak to railfans

Not a  bad idea if you can become friedly and familiar with some of the workers on any road maybe even use one as a reference.

  2. You have a good start, if you can demonstrate a strong desire to work in the railroad industry, any human resources manager would have to consider your application.

You should consider applying for any entry level position, the one that gets the most openings is the track department due to the seasonal nature.

That gives you a head start for job openings in the operating (train service) department as they take transfers first.

And if possible don't restrict yourself to one area, if they ask if you're willing to relocate say YES.

In time, you will have the chance to relocate to whatever terminal you wish through seniority.

Don't be discouraged, most railroaders I know had to apply more than once. Be persistent.

    Good Luck!

  3. If your a railfan, I would suggest NOT mentioning that. Railroads want to make sure you are working safe, and not have to worry about you daydreaming about that rare locomotive 2 tracks over. Safety rules on the RR.

  4. Assuming you're 18,just make sure you have at least two years of work experience, and then go apply. They might not hire you because of your age,
