i recently bought the sampler pack of tazo teas which included two different types of chai teabags. i've only had chai tea lattes, which have milk, and chai tea with milk in it.

my question is, does chai tea HAVE to have milk or can i drink/make it sans milk like black coffee? and if it has to have milk do i boil the milk with the water or pour it in after like cream into coffee?

  1. I drink chai tea without milk and it tastes perfect, so I guess you can too.... I don't think that there's any tea in fact that must be served with milk. And when they are, fresh milk is added after making the tea, like cream into coffee :)

ps If you mean the chai tea as that specific spiced milky one, such as masala chai then you make it by having 1/4 to 1/2 parts milk mixed with water and then heated close to or to boiling temperature.

  2. No, you could prepare it black, just the tea bag and water.

Or for the latte you could fill a mug with half boiling water, add the tea bag and let step for about a minute or two. Then add hot milk to the rest of the water, and there you go chai latte!

You could also add sugar depending on your preferences.

  3. I work in a tea store, you can prepare the Chai tea and consume it sans milk  the Traditional way however to brew chai is in a pot on the stove. Bring one cup of water to boil for every bag you are going to brew. Boil one bag for 5 minutes then reduce the heat to medium and add one cup of milk and remove the bag, simmer for about 2 minutes stirring occasionally so the milk doesn't scald to the bottom of the pan,  and serve sweetened as desired... ofcourse the traditional method would also use a loose leave tea, however this will suffice.
