  1. Our son has a metabolic disorder that can be life-threatening.  We didn't prepare him any differently for pre-school, but we did prepare the school.  I met with the administrator as well as the individual teachers and explained the disorder, what he needs, etc.  I also put together an informative notebook that outlines the disorder, has his medical information listed, and provides additional information for them to learn about the disorder.  The book travels with him from each class if he needs to be moved to another group at any time.  I also meet with his new teachers every year to insure that they do not have any questions.  Our son is doing wonderfully and we attribute that to the care and concern his teachers show.

  2. there are thousands of disorders that exist, if might help if you specify what type of disorder you're dealing with so you can get some better answers

  3. Prepare the children by talking to their teachers and explaining your plans for the child, what you do that works, what does not work. Educate the teachers about the disorder and explain your expectations from her- if they are reasonable.

As far as preparing the child, it depends on the age, and the disorder.

  4. I looked for the free programs in my area and found that they had a program for children with learning disabilities and other disorders.  They start the child going to school at age 3.  Then they only allow ten children in the classroom and there were to teachers in the classroom.  The children went a half day.

My child is still not in the grade she would be age wise but she has caught up to the preschool level and will be going to kindergarten this next school  year.  I prefer to meet with the teacher by myself first and let them know what is going on.  Then a week before they attend take the child up there to meet the teacher each day and to see the classroom.  That way the child gets a since of who they are and make sure you do it with a little bit of enthusiasm in your voice to make it sound fun.  The child will be more comfortable with the teacher and so will you.

If your child has a certain type of disorder talk to the school and see what the teachers qualifications are for that disorder, if not satisfied go to the school enrollment office and find out which school has the qualified teacher and have them bus your child to and from school.  You as a parent have that right and the right to request what you need for your child.

Make sure you do an IEP with the school district or school your child is going to attend.

  5. Sorry .... who has the disorder here?  The parent or the child?
