Question:

Preparing for a skating competition?

I am preparing for a skating competition. It's at my home rink. Are there any things I can do right before this competition? I am going on vacation in 4 days, a little before the competition. Is that good or bad? Will it throw my jumps off?

  1. Since your going on vacation, try to fit in a short practice before your competition and just run through your program and jumps/spins. The vacation might actually help you relax before the comp. Its not necessarily bad or good.

Do double run throughs at least once per practice to build up endurance, and that will ensure that your jumps/spins at the end will be as good as the beginning ones.

Break down your program. Practice the spiral sequence, footwork, jumps, spins and other sections seperatly. This helps with attention to detail. Now is the time to do some extra streching (splits, layback positions, biellmans, you name it) off ice to get those spirals/split jumps sparkly.

Get someone to video tape your program runthrough. Go over this, and see what your doing that you could do better.

This might sound dumb but get your program music on your ipod and listen to it in front of a mirror and runthrough as best you can off ice. This is really when to practice your arms (and see if they look goofy or not) and facial expressions.

    Checklist:

-Get at least 9 hours sleep before the competition. AT LEAST!

-Bring your music (TWO copies, just in case)

-Bring at least two waters, sip and keep hydrated

-Eat LIGHT before (salad, toast, bagel, etc. dont stuff yourself) and bring a snack

-Skates (Obvious, but people have forgotten them before)

    -Extra skate laces

-A small handheld screwdriver for loose screws (again just in case)

-get your skate dealer to buff up those blades!

-Make sure you have new, unholed tights (footed and over the boot)

-Bring your jacket and gloves for warmup

-Bring makup and hairspray (Just in case your coach is a tyrant and wants to change it last minute)

-If you can, dont wear a bra under your dress (eww i know)

-SOME people say dont wear underwear (ive never done that, i dont really mind wedgies)

    - Wear your tights to your b***s (sounds dumb but it hides frumpy bumps. even if your skinny do it, or they bulge)

-shave those armpits! the worst is to see someone with fuzz in a halter dress... gross

Best of all, dont be nervous, dont think about it, GOOD LUCK!!

Sorry this was so long! XD

  2. Make a checklist of the things you need:

    1. Make sure you have a skating dress a few weeks before the competition and that you have skated in it at least twice

    2. Have an extra pair of tights (at least 1 pair)

    3. A close fitting sweater for warm-ups

    4. Sharpen your skates no less than 2 weeks before competition.

    5. Bring at least one pair of new laces in case if one breaks

    6. Polish your boots and make them look nice

    7. Make sure you have an extra copy of your music with you

    8. Have a hairstyle picked out and try it out

    9. Have at least 2 lists with your skating times on them

Your jumps should be fine but make sure when you are there that you think about your routine and go through it in your head. Practice a little off-ice.

  3. Maybe while your away you should be doing off ice:

    - try practising your jumps off ice, if you can do it on ice you can do it off ice.

    - practise your spiral positions off ice

    - stretch

    - practice all spin positions on the spot

Hold all positions for 10 seconds, for off ice practice.

    - also walk through your program

    - try going for a run, to keep your stamina up

This would also be good to do for warm up at the competition as well.

  4. Make sure you do off ice while on vacation to keep your muscles in check.

  5. First of all don't worry about going on vacation.

When I get back from vacation I do better!! You lose bad habits and are relaxed that way.

Things to do The day before you compete:

*Try to get at least 9 hours of sleep.

    *Get all your things together.

This should include- 2 tights, warm-up clothes, music, a copy of your music, gloves, gaurds, and a schedule of the times you compete.

Things to do right before you compete:

    *Jumping jacks.

    *Stretch!!!!

    *off- ice practice

*A run through of your program.

    *rest.

    *Listen to music.
