Question:

Preparing for the SAT's?

For those of you who took in and scored high, what are some of the things that helped to raise your score. Right now, I have a barron's critical reading workbook and math workbook, as well as Gruber's Complete SAT. The SAT is in 5 weeks, and I would like to really prepare. I've already taken in once and I received a 1040.

Any advice?

  1. Well I suggest that you start reading up on the subject that you are weakest at the most. At this point all you can do is learn the techniques of taking the test. For example for the math part, you should know what to eliminate like the larger numbers or the smaller numbers. Or when substituting the multiple choice answers into the equation go with the medium number first and if the wrong answer tells you that it's to low or high then you know what number you need to substitute next. For the reading part, learn to read a little bit faster and make flashcards of vocabularies. I think that a lot of review books would give you a list of SAT vocabularies. Learning new and harder vocabularies should've been a goal when you reach 11th grade.

Try to get comfortable with carrying out these test techniques when taking the test. Time yourself first with a practice one. I got 1600 my first try and went to study up some more test techniques and got an 1800 something. But most of all relax and don't freak out. Don't spend too much time on something you wouldn't know. AND ALSO learn the elimination technique because that is one of my favorite and reliable thing to do on the test. My rule of thumb is that once I eliminate two and still don't know, I leave it and come back and if I can eliminate another one then I take my chance. DONT guess EVER if you can't eliminate anything. It's best to skip if you have no clue after reading and thinking within a minute. I always see someone bubble in random choices when they have ten minutes left.

Go to sparknotes or collegeboard for some help on SAT.
