I am preparing to go to the air force. A few things to get done before I can take the ASVAB...again. I have a few questions. I will leave without my husband and kids obviously, but when I graduate, when can they come? after I finish school or while im in school? and can I live off base at this point or not until I finish school. Also...where is bootcamp for the air force? San Antonio? I also wanted to know how often are you likely to get deployed....or does it depends on what you enlist for. I want to pick up an administrative job but not sure if you have to go away often for that as well and if so, how often. I would like to get stationed as close to NY as possible but that;s like the base in D.C right? and I was told by someone in the Air force that, that base is really for people who pick up government type assignments? Did I understand him correctly? (Andrew's Base is it?) well...alot of questions and have not talked to my recruiter because she service like the whole county plus where im at and she's not always available. if there is any Air force mom/wife familiar with all this, it would be a big help to talk to you one on one. Have sone other questions about if your husband does not plan to come to where you are stationed as well, but you would like for your kids to come. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

  1. Hi there I will try to break down your question. As far as your family goes after boot camp in San Antonio, you can have your family with you depending how long your tech school is. I think any tech school over six months you can have your dependants PCS with you. If you are active duty you will deploy at some point. Andrews AFB is in DC and yes it is the home of Air Force One lots of upper level stuff. After Tech school the Air Force can send you to any duty station they want or need your skill. Have you looked at joining the Air National Guard. They have full time spots and you can choose what base you want to work at.

  2. So many questions... I was in the USAF as a Security Policeman....now called Security Forces. Yeppppp...Basic training will be at Lackland AFB which is located in western San Antonio. The family can come on base to watch your graduation ceremony and you can probably live off base in an apartment while you attend your Tech School.

Air Force likes to make you deploy to a new base about every two years. So typically after you finish your AIT you will be at two different bases, perhaps even overseas. All of my assignments were overseas, but only because I requested it.I served in England and Italy and went special assignment (TDY) to Germany and Philippines in my 6 years. I also travelled to 12 other foreign countries on leave.

I don't know what your AFSC will be, but your family WILL BE allowed to travel with you overseas, UNLESS it is classified as a "Non-Accompanied" tour....Why would your husband want to "stay at home" when you are overseas or 8 states away???? You'll need his assistance and support when living overseas.

    Good Luck

  3. I am a Marine and the way things work in the corps is pretty much how you think. You will go to boot camp, then school, then to a base. Once you get the your final duty station you are authorized to have dependents. You will be assigned on base housing or will have to option to live out in town so to speak. We had the option to pick whether we wanted west coast, east cost, or overseas, so yea. Sorry i cant be more specific, good luck.
