Question:

Preparing to move out at 18?

Hello everyone. Well, I'm currently 16 years 11 months old and in year 11 at college (or senior high school, if you're in America) and working part time. I am planning on moving out of my parent's house at the end of next year and getting an apartment after I am done with school. I will be 18 and a half by then. Then in 2010 I will take a gap year and work full time. The year after that I plan to go to university (or college if you're in America) and study full time while working part time. I should have more than enough money saved up by then to support myself while only working part time.

So anyway, I realize it's still a long way off. But what can I start doing now to prepare myself for this? I want to be completely ready to move out by the time i finish year 12. And I feel like I still have a long way to go. Also, I had no idea what category to put this in so it's in studying abroad because that seemed like the best fit from what was recommended.

Thanks.

  1. It's called "university" in America too. :-p

My suggestion would be to learn to live on your own -- cooking, laundry, washing, cleaning, etc. Start looking now for university information and for where you will live (if you haven't already). It's always good to be prepared than to have things at the last minute.

I'm living alone now and the hardest thing for me is cooking. I'm used to cooking pasta... sandwiches.... frozen veggies.... I miss really good home-made food. So learn how to do that. Haha. If you don't already know, of course.

    Good luck. :-)

  2. Hey, I moved out of home at the start of this year and into student accommodation at university. basically all I can suggest is that you know how to work the washing machine, how to iron your clothes, and how to cook something more substantial than 2-minute-noodles. Obviously our situations are a little different, as I'm getting catered meals 4 nights a week, and spend the majority of my time studying, but i hope that i could help anyway.
