Question:

Prerequisites/Conditions for MMA?

Hi, I've been sparring & working a couple of months now. I'm 5;11 185, & I'm in pretty good shape. I sparred several times & hitting bags most of the time, & workin on muscle groups to increase my punch power, shoulders, triceps, biceps, back, etc.

Question is .. I'm interested in joining a MMA class. What should I know or work on before I join so that I can expedite my learning process there? Answer based on experiences or knowledge.

  1. well does your gym offer mma. and what kind of trainning are you doing now. well one of the biggest things that helped me was the crossfit workouts at crossfit.com i am in 100 times better shape now.  


  2. Consider this:

    Technique and ability will only come with practice, repitition, and applying your skills in sparring/tournaments and such.

    But one thing you can do to expedite your abilities and be able to compete is get your stamina and flexibility up.

    Poor stamina is one of the biggest reasons people lose fights.  So do alot of cardio and plyometric exercises.  Also, do alot of streching, you will need the flexibility and agility to pull submissions off.

    One other thing that seperates winners from losers is the ability to be mentally prepared.  Often guys are great at training and sparring, but somehow "forget" all the technique when their adrenaline is pumping in the ring.

    Focus on training and when you are exhausted and making yourself perform proper technique when you are spent.  This will help.


  3. you should consider your self a blank slate. don't go in thinking that any thing can help you that you have learned before. That is how I started. I had done tae Kwon do and done much sparring with other martial artists and am pretty strong. when you start you learn some basics and go from there. just be willing to learn like a person who has not learned this stuff before and that's when you will excel
