  1. thee manners on a daily basis so it should be learned the same way. In everything they do they have to put it in practice so it becomes a "natural thing"

  2. Have everyone get in a circle and say something nice about everyone in the circle.

  3. Teaching about sharing by having less toys than you have students.

I think learning to share and be kind to others is one of the most important "etiquette" things a child can learn.  You can incorporate the "please and thank you's into the exercise.

You point out to the kids that not everyone has a toy, or whatever it is....   encourage them to be kind and share, and rain praise on those that do.

Start out with 2 kids who will "model" the correct behavior.  Then you have shown an example.

The ones who are not willing to share, end up being the ones with no toy, so they can experience how that feels.

Everyone in the group experiences what it is like to have, what it is like to not have, and what it is like to share.

Using encouragement and praise, you can change behavior.

  4. I don't think this should be a separate lesson necessarily.  Do things every day.

Teach the children that every time you want to walk past the group sitting down, you say, "Excuse me, ______" then they stand up.  Say thank you when you're done and they may sit down.

Remind them to push their chairs in every time they go to put materials away.

Build up their concentration so they can focus on their tasks.

  5. Maybe have a contest to see who says please and thank you the most during class.

  6. I used learning sign laungage to help with manners.  I also made them say please and thank you during snack time, etc.  There are many books out there that can help with teaching manners also.  Bernstein bears is one of them.  You can also play mother may I.

  7. have contests and see who remembers to say yes man and yes sir or yes mama and no mama and please and thank you and make them share and reward when they do

  8. I think every activity that I do in a classroom includes manners. That is one reason for preschool, learn how to share, how to respect both children and adults and to know right from wrong. Yes we do teach small and large motor skill, we teach cutting and using a pencil properly. But every activity includes working with others or listening to instructions. Lunch or snack is a good time to talk about restaurant manners. One important thing I feel a teacher can do is to "catch" a child using good manners. Then say oh I am hearing some good words like please and excuse me this morning. All children want to be complimented so they will do their best to be heard by you in a positive way.
