I have a group of preschoolers that I am going to do an activity with today. My instructor wants to know the purpose of me having them paint...what skills it helps with... I have no idea, I just know that I like my own daughter to paint. Ideas? Is it something that is cognitive? Motor skills??

  1. Are you in England? We use the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum so the aims would be:

-creative development-exploring media and materials-using hands to feel textures, express ideas, create something from a manipulative material.

-Physical-fine manipulative skills and control of the body. If they do hand painting and things then it is also bodily awareness.

These are the main too but also:

-colours-mixing, naming, recognising they are all different, having favourites

-communication-talking about ideas, what they are doing, giving meaning to the marks.

-social-sharing ideas, talking to friends, sharing the work space and materials, self-esteem-its free expression so they cant do it wrong!

  2. use their role model.

show the best painting for the children

  3. they learn about colors, motor skills, eye hand cordination, creativity, activity messes, develops there little minds in thought and creation.    ")

  4. When children use art materials they are developing problem solving and thinking skills. How can I get the effect I want. Oh yes, I remember I was able to mix colors, or use paste or combine paint with crayons. The objective of a good art lesson is not to make something, but to learn while using materials. (the process of using the materials is more important than the product that is created. Many people do not value creative thinking and seem to use projects where everyone needs to make the same thing. Creative thinking has enabled us to move from talking on a phone attached to a wall to using a small portable device. Scientists, engineers all use creative thinking and art is a great way for children to develop this skill.

  5. it helps them start learning about colors lke naming then and distinguishing them from each other.. also, it hones the left side of their brain which is mostly for the art stuff so they are on a head start if one of them might become the next picasso or da vinci of their generation!

  6. It's creativity and a way to express yourself! It's eye to hand motions. Shows that they can express themselfs and have a voice even as small kids! They have something to say so let them say it!

  7. Painting helps them to work on their fine motor skills. They learn how to hold and manipulate small objects(the paint brush in this case). they can learn how to mix colors, red and blue make purple, ect.they express their creativity through free art instead of structured art activies not to mention that it's just plain fun

  8. do polka dots with fingerpaint and hang them on the walls.

  9. Art does all the things mentioned above. Some really great answers. I would just like to add that the wiring of the brain is very complex and by having a child do art, they are making neuron connections that will help the other parts of the brain.

The people I know who excelled in math and science were taught a musical instrument or painted.
