i'm doing a preschool lesson on plants and heard that lima beans grow pretty fast. i'm kinda going off memory, and its not working so well. i was told to soak the beans overnight in water and then i planned to put them in a ziplock bag with water in a warm area so they could sprout and the children could see the change. right now i have beans soaking and they look like they are splitting open and not going to work for this... do i need a certain kind? what am i doing wrong? should i try any other kind of plant? need this by monday

  1. You are in the right direction.  the beans will open and new plant will grow.  You can try white beans or mongo beans.  In the school where my children go tho the kids are the one doing the experiment.  The children ask them to bring some seeds and a cup with water.  The kids soak the seeds in it.  They saw the changes. They saw cotyledons and new plants sprouting. If you need it on monday.  Do not throw your soaked beans. It will sprout.

  2. You have to buy the beans that are meant for planting, not eating because otherwise you're likely to have lots of duds.  I know my son used green bean seeds and we just planted them in soil and watched them grow.  it took about a week to see them sprout (I think), but then they grew really fast.  I would try a new batch of beans, if I were you!

  3. just buy the bean seeds in the packet at the store. don't use dried beans. good luck!

  4. Try cress - it grows so quickly. For fun you can plant it in cotton wool inside an empty egg shell. Grows like hair.

For a good cross curricular pdf...try atozteacherstuff and go to store...it costs a little bit - not much - and has great BLM's and great ideas.

  5. check out this website

  6. We ate a honey-dew melon....and placed the seeds in a zipper baggy with moist soil.(after letting them dry on a papertowel over the weekend) We placed the baggy on the deck...it worked well.  We had sprouts with in 4 days...and now an entire row of plants.  feel free to join my new group for homeschool links.  (I started the group to teach my daughter about the net)http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Home-Schoo...
