Question:

Preschool speech therapy k and g sounds?

I'm a Speech Pathologist and work with preschoolers. I'm really struggling to get a child to correctly produce /k,g/, even in isolation. It's so hard at the young of an age for them to understand what I"m telling/showing them to do. I've tried a variety of things as well as a mirror, for what it can do. Any suggestions?? thanks!

  1. join the yahoo group phonologicaltherapy

it will answer every question you have ever had. seriously.

  2. Use games. Make them say words correctly to roll the dice or something like that.

  3. I taught at a pre-k only district school last year and the curriculum was language-based.  During circle time every morning we used Dr. Jean's Alphardy song which is picture based.  The children love it and repeat the words and sounds even when the song is not on.  My students also learned the alphabet this way.

*I would recommend asking their teacher to use it sometimes during the day (if you are in a school setting).

Also Starfall.com has an alphabet song where a man is demonstrating words, letter sounds and signing what he is talking about.

Express Train CD's are great as well and language based to focus on sounds in isolation.

    Good luck to you!

  4. One way is to have the child open his/her mouth  and cough, utilizing a flavored tongue depressor to keep the tip of the tongue depressed.  I usually drill cough sound for a few minutes using tongue depressor and mirror then play a game and then drill again.

  5. Search for phonological therapy techniques. If this child has many other phonological speech errors the Hodson's

Approach works great as long as family members are involved. This type of speech errors are typically more difficult to produce in isolation. Choose words at will help facilitate these back sounds. (assuming that the sounds are being fronted.)
